Book Review: Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead

After reading an extremely favorable review by a friend on Facebook, I decided to read Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead.  Not only was the book praised by friends but it is a Pulitzer Prize Winner and a National Book Award Winner.  So, there’s that.
Through the story of the main character Cora, we connect to the fearful and hopeless life of a slave in pre-civil war America as we witness the devastating tragedies that befall herself and those who surround her.
Whitehead gives the reader glimpses of hope throughout this book, but I found myself frequently disappointed and frustrated by how abruptly that hope was pulled away.  And the more that I thought about it, the more I realized that most likely was Whitehead’s point.
