Kombucha – Why Wouldn’t Cha?

with No Comments

Inspired by the book, The Beauty of Dirty Skin by Dr. Whitney Bowe, I’ve been on a mission to find some probiotic products that will increase the good bacteria in my gut to improve my skin and overall health.  So, I decided to try kombucha.
What is Kombucha Anyway?
Kombucha is a beverage which can be served cold or hot that is produced by fermenting sweet tea with a culture of yeast and bacteria otherwise known as SCOBY.  The SCOBY breaks down the sugar in the tea and releases probiotic bacteria.  After it ferments, the drink becomes carbonated, so don’t be surprised that it has a little fizz.
Why Kombucha?
While new to many of us, kombucha has been around for 2000 years as a remedy for inflammation and cancer prevention.  Research is still ongoing but much of the results are encouraging regarding cancer prevention, improved mental health, weight loss, reducing liver toxins, and  reducing cholesterol.
But, it’s the gut where kombucha is really gaining in notoriety.  It is touted as a rich, probiotic drink that will improve gut health, which can help improve digestion, improve your immunity, and oh one more thing – all of these factors will help improve your skin.  Cue The Beauty of Dirty Skin book.  But, don’t take our word for it – read the book and make your own decisions.
Kombucha can be made at home, but there are many great products to buy at your local grocery or health food store.
Here are our faves:

Gingerade Kombucha
Libby’s Favorite Kombucha drink: Gingerade by GTS Synergy

I like this GTS Synergy Gingerade the best because it is low in calories and doesn’t have a strong vinegar taste compared to others.  It’s actually very similar to ginger ale.  My kids even like it!”  – Libby

Ashlee’s Favorite Health-Ade Kombucha & Suja Probiotic Juice

The Cayenne isn’t hot, it just has a little kick!  The apple one is smooth and nice with no overpowering flavor.  The lemongrass is my personal favorite – it’s strong but if you like lemon flavor, you’ll love this!” – Ashlee
