Run in Style with These Five Top Shoes

Looking at my worn out heels, I know it’s time when I need a new pair of running shoes.   Most experts recommend replacing your running shoes every 300-400 miles.  Which means if you are averaging 9-10 miles a week, you should be replacing your running shoes every 8-9 months.  This number varies based on your weight and height, but it’s a good rule of thumb in general.

Below are Ashlee’s top picks for running shoes that are not only great for your feet, but also keep you running in style:

Nike Air VaporMax Flyknit Utility

Nike Air VaporMax Flyknit Utility

While The Nike Air VaporMax Flyknit Utility running shoe comes in seven different colors, all black is my preference.  This shoe is designed to be easy to lace up, has added foot cushioning, light-weight, and has a higher ankle for added support.

The Nike Air VaporMax Flyknit 2

Nike Air VaporMax Flyknit 2

The Nike Air VaporMax Flyknit 2 in this blush color is pretty cool.  These are a peek into what I am eyeing for my next running shoe – I’m tempted to buy these.  The Flyknit 2 offers more heel support which is great for those of you suffering with heel pain, especially the dreaded plantar fasciitis – dun, dun, dun…

GEL-Kayano 25

GEL-Kayano 25

The Gel-Kayano 25 running shoe in all black is what I end up with just about every time.  Asics have returned to their original foot design which has made a lot of runners happy that their toes aren’t being squeezed.  If you left Asics for a while, it might be time to come back and try out this new version.

GEL-Quantum 180 3

GEL-QUANTUM 180 3

The GEL-Quantum 180 3 is one I might try also.  I am not a fan of white soles but this one is white then black again, so I’m warming up to it.  This shoe runs a bit heavier compared to most light-weight shoes, but the added comfort and durability makes it worth it.

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 18

Brooks Adrenaline GTS 18

I am also a big fan of Brooks, all black again of course!  This Brooks Adrenaline GTS 18 has great cushioning and arch support.  It’s a great, everyday running shoe that is true to size.

Plum Brooks Adrenaline GTS 18

This color in the same shoe is also in the running (get it ha ha). I like the fact that the sole is the same color as the shoe.  Like I said white bottoms bug me personally.  These could be pretty fun!

Get Your Kids Excited to Play Outside

If there is one struggle that mom’s are sharing this summer, it is trying to pull their kids away from Fortnite.  If left to their own devices (see what I did there?), kids would stay inside for unlimited hours, sporting headsets with mouthpieces, screaming to their friends, trying to be the last one standing.  In our day, we called games like this Kick the Can or Ghosts in the Graveyard, but we didn’t have an earpiece on and we were running our butts off rather than sitting and staring at a screen.  Ah the 80s…..

So, how do you encourage kids to get off their devices and get outside?  Here’s a fun toy that is sure to entice them:

All you need is a backyard, open field, park, or a beach, and a willing kid or two (teens and adults included).  Then, let the games begin.  Check out my girls having a blast – oh and us too!

And who knows, maybe getting them outside will encourage more outside play? Maybe we can bring back a resurgence of those popular outside 80s games while they’re at it?

6 Reasons You Should Try Pilates Now

We recently visited Club Pilates in Chagrin Falls to see what all the rage was about. What we found is that if you are looking for a workout to improve your strength, flexibility, concentration, and is gentle to your joints – pilates might be the right workout for you.

Here are 6 reasons you should try pilates now:

  1. Improve Core Strength:  You will increase muscle strength and tone, particularly of your abdominal muscles, lower back, hips and buttocks (the ‘core muscles’ of your body).
  2. Improve Posture. Pilates helps you to enhance muscular control of your back and limbs and improve stabilization of your spine.
  3. Improve flexibility.  The movements in pilates will help you improve flexibility.  “Being flexible and having full joint mobility can have several beneficial implications on quality of life, including: reducing day-to-day pain and increasing vascular health” states Jimmy Haley at the Center for Fitness and Wellness at Penn State.  “Tight muscles do not allow joints to reach the full extent of their range of motion, which can lead to pain and injury.”
  4. Prevent Injuries & safely rehabilitate.  Pilates not only helps flexibility, but it also helps to balance your muscular strength on both sides of your body which helps to prevent injuries.  Many injuries result from overuse.  Pilates helps to prevent these injuries and helps you to safely rehabilitate if you already suffer from musculoskeletal pain.
  5. Improve physical coordination and balance. The movements in pilates work on your coordination and balance.  Pilates can help you relax your shoulders, neck and upper back. Who doesn’t want that?
  6. Improve concentration.  While you will increase your lung capacity and circulation through deep breathing, you will also improve your concentration.  Pilates is great for increasing your body awareness, while helping you relax and manage stress.

With that being said, it sounds like we should all be trying to incorporate a few pilates classes where we can.

I was very happy with my experience in this Pilates studio in general – I was also very impressed with Pilates as an exercise modality. I can truly see why people enjoy it so much!  Leaving there I felt tighter in my core, longer in my length and had an interesting sense of calm. I did a cardio pilates class that they offered and I really did feel my heart rate go up. I mean have you ever jumped while being able to lay down? Kinda fun!I am excited to try some of their other types of classes. – Ashlee

Resist Muscle Loss – #noexcuses

I love me some workout classes – but let’s face it with work, kids, and life in general, something has to give ….at least sometimes.  So, what’s a girl to do if you want to strength train at home but you don’t want to invest in a lot of expensive equipment?  Ahem – to those of you who don’t think this post pertains to you – think again, especially if you are entering or moving past your 40s – we are losing muscle mass every decade ladies!  That is why it’s crazy important to incorporate strength training in your weekly routine.

We’ve even made it easy for you and found an inexpensive solution – Black Mountain Products resistance bands!  This set of five resistance bands let’s you create a great workout from anywhere – they are even travel-friendly which is a total bonus!

The set includes 5 bands, two handles, a door anchor, and an ankle strap – so you can get a great workout for your upper and lower body.  While each band has its own resistance, you can also easily clip and combine the bands to increase resistance (from 4 – 75 lbs).  Better yet, all Black Mountain Products come with a manufacturer’s lifetime waranty.

While we highly recommend joining in the camaraderie of a workout class,  we know it’s not always possible.  And if that’s the case, here is your solution.  There’s even a ton of great resistance band workouts available online if you need a little direction.  Here’s a sample we put together just to show you how easy it can be for you:
