5 Tips to Getting Back on Track After the Holidays

gettimg back on track after holidays

If you have been overindulging in food and drink since the kids got out of school for winter break, then, like us, you are probably starting to think about returning to a healthier lifestyle.

Below are our five tips for getting back on track:

1.  Set realistic goals.

If your goals or resolutions are realistic, you are more likely to stick to them.  Keep in mind that a pound is equivalent to 3,500 calories.  So cutting 500 calories a day would lead to losing 1 lb/week.

If you’ve never run before, don’t sign up for a marathon.  Maybe try a 5K first.  And, if running isn’t your thang – that’s fine too.  There are so many different types of exercise.  Find out which one you like and you will be more likely to stick to that.  Most gyms will offer a free trial class or even a free week of classes.  Shop around and see what you like.  Not into a gym just yet?  There are tons of workouts online.  Really, there’s something out there for everyone.

2.  Weigh yourself once a week.

Don’t weigh yourself daily.  Instead, pick a day and a time (morning is best) each week to weigh yourself.  Track it and watch your progress.  Weighing yourself each day is bound to have many ups and downs which can defeat your motivation.  Remember it’s about progress, not perfection.

3.  Hold yourself accountable.

Grab a group of girlfriends, a spouse, or join an online weight loss group.  Let’s face it, we aren’t always motivated to workout – having some accountability will get you moving on the days you don’t feel up for it.

4.  Surround yourself with positivity.

Positive quotes can be helpful in keeping you motivated. And yes, there’s an app for that!  Sign up for an app that will send you daily motivation and positivity.  Check out  Shine and Louise Hay Affirmation Meditations for daily messages.  Or, go old school and use post-its with positive messages.

Also, it’s important to surround yourself with positive people.  They are more likely to keep you motivated because they also want you to do well.  Limit your time  with people who make you feel bad about starting or following a healthy lifestyle.  If they care about you, they should be encouraging you.

5.  Cut back on sugary treats – and yes, that includes alcohol too.

Just keep reminding yourself that these are empty calories.  If you have been adding several drinks each night or reaching for the holiday cookies, you’ve been adding a lot of extra calories.    It’s time (well, at least after New Years) to cut back and get back in control of your diet.  Have healthy, go-to-snacks readily available and remove the junk food.  Add a Simple Green Smoothie into your morning routine or grab a cup of Sweet and Spicy Tea in the afternoon instead of something sweet.

Christmas Smoothie with Cranberries

cranberries for a smoothie

Throwing frozen cranberries into your smoothie this holiday season will help strengthen your immunity and help protect your body from free radicals. Our Christmas smoothie combines kale and cranberries which makes for a gorgeous, dark, pine color – perfect the holiday season!  It’s delicious!

Why cranberries?  Cranberries are higher in antioxidants than other fruits and berries.  Antioxidants help detoxify the body of harmful free-radicals.  Since free-radicals play a role in the aging process and the development of diseases like heart disease and cancer,  it’s a good idea to add antioxidants into your daily diet. Plus, cranberries are known to help with urinary tract infections.  According to our friend Mykelle, just five cranberries a day can help in preventing UTIs.

Since cranberries can be a little tart, I sweetened the smoothie with frozen strawberries and a ripe banana.  It’s a great balance of flavors with a little bit of sweetness, but not too much.

Christmas Smoothie:

  • 1 handful frozen cranberries
  • 1 cup lacinato kale (other kale types or even spinach will work as well)
  • 3/4 cup frozen strawberries (organic preferred)
  • 1/2 ripe banana
  • 1 cup water

Place water and kale in your Vitamix or blender of choice.  Make sure this is properly blended before adding any other ingredients so you get a nice smooth consistency.  Once this is blended well, add remaining ingredients and mix until blended.  Pour into a glass and enjoy 🙂

Top Picks for All Natural Perfumes

I was asked about all natural perfumes several times, so I did a little digging!  Here are a few that I found:

Free people 1809 collection.  These scents are “100% all-natural formulas with no artificial notes or chemically altered ingredients. Scents the way nature intended. Scents that transport you, naturally.”  Click on the image below to learn more about each fragrance.

Skylar collection created by a previous worker at The Honest Company.  Skylar was inspired by women looking for perfumes that didn’t contain all the chemicals found in most perfumes.  “Skylar is a brand that you can feel great about spritzing. The name Skylar was inspired by the qualities of a clear day – airy, natural, and beautiful.”  My pick is Skylar Isle -inspired by the purity of water, but I’d recommend buying the sample pack and choose the scent that is best for you 🙂  Also, when you buy a sample palette, you will earn a $20 credit on a full size purchase.

Loaded Sweet Potato

These Loaded Sweet Potatoes are amazing and oh so good for you!  Did we mention they are low in calories too?

Sweet potatoes are perfect for this time of the year because they are packed with so many benefits. First they are 30% lower in calories than your average potato. They also provide half of your daily Vitamin C and over 4x your daily Vitamin A needs – two vitamins we need to boost our immune system during cold and flu season.

Sweet potatoes are also good for your skin.  They contain high levels of manganese which help with collagen production – need we say more?  Okay, maybe just one more thing – they are also great for weight loss because they are a fiber-like starch which makes you feel full faster and longer.  Holla!  Still not convinced on Sweet Potatoes?  Read even more about how great they are for you here.

Loaded Sweet Potato

Ingredients (2 servings):

  • 1 sweet potato
  • 1 grilled chicken breast
  • 2 slices turkey bacon
  • 1/4 cup sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1-2 tablespoon sour cream (full fat)
  • 1-2 tablespoon Sriracha
  • 1 tablespoon chives – chopped

Cut sweet potato in half and place on a baking sheet.  Bake at 400 until sweet potato is baked through and soft (about 40 minutes).  In the meantime, cook your slices of turkey bacon.  Chop your grilled chicken and turkey bacon to bite size pieces.

Mix your sour cream and Sriracha based on your spice tolerance.

When sweet potatoes are done, sprinkle chicken, turkey bacon and cheese evenly between the two.  Drop a dollop of the Sriracha – sour cream mix and sprinkle with chives.  Enjoy!  I know I did 🙂

Sweet Potato Recipe Ideas

This recipe was inspired from @danalemonthyme on Instagram.  She used bacon (the real deal) but I decided to lighten it up a bit.  With as little as you use, you probably are fine either way.  I’m just on a bit of a turkey bacon kick these days.

Natural Deodorant that Works

I’ve always been a little skeptical about “natural” deodorants.  Let me take a step back.  If you’ve ever worked out with me, you will know that I sweat a lot (guess who’s writing this article (ha ha!).  So, I have put many anti-perspirants and deodorants to the test and have only found a select few that work.  But, as I get further into my 40s, I’m trying to make my daily routine as healthy as possible.  And, since aluminum has been linked to breast cancer, I thought now would be a good time to try to rid this from my daily routine.

Native Deodorant Coconut Vanilla
Native Deodorant Coconut Vanilla

I tried Native deodorant in Coconut Vanilla, which it turns out is their most popular scent.  Native instructs first-time users to try it for 10 days giving your body enough time to rid itself of other aluminum-based products you may have been using.  The other instruction is to wash first, then apply lightly.  That may sound like a pain, but I just grabbed a washcloth each morning, rinsed, dried, and applied.  Pretty simple and I was set for the day.

The good news is that it worked – no bad body odor!  It’s important to remember this is a deodorant and not an anti-perspirant.  I did not notice a difference in how much I perspired but others that reviewed with me noticed a small increase.

My recommendation is to go for it and Go Native.  I really liked the deodorant and I feel good that I am ridding myself of a potentially harmful substance that I was using on a daily basis.  Did I mention, it’s also paraben-free? Native offers a collection of amazing scents like coconut lime, lavender and rose, and even pumpkin spice latte (how fun is that?). They also have a sensitive line and a full line for men.

Don’t forget about your tweens and teens!  Just remind them how to use it.  Rinse, dry, and apply (just once a day is all I had to do).  Buy a sample pack through Amazon here.

7 Day Smoothie Challenge

I don’t know about you, but after most holiday weekends, I feel like I need to hit the refresh button.  So, I whipped up the Green Goblin Smoothie from Simple Green Smoothies to give me some much needed energy and get myself back on track for the week.

I should mention that extremes aren’t really my thing, especially when it comes to nutrition.  I’m more of the mindset that moderation is a good thing.  So, when I found the 7 day smoothie challenge called Simple 7 by Simple Green Smoothies, I was pumped that it involved making small changes rather than changing your whole diet.

After you submit your email, you’ll receive a A Simple 7 – Game Plan, and the best part – it’s free!  It includes a shopping list of the 7 ingredients you will need for the week (yes, 7!).  And you will recognize all 7 ingredients and easily find them at your local grocery store.

Green Goblin Smoothie
The Green Goblin Smoothie

You will also be given a daily smoothie schedule with easy to follow recipes.  All the challenge requires is that you follow the daily smoothie schedule for 7 days.  Yep, just add one smoothie a day for a week – no other requirements.  Since this type of challenge was right up my alley, I submitted my email and started it.  It was super easy to follow and I felt great. I had energy, my skin looked better, and I had lost all those pesky weekend lbs. that love to follow me around 😉

The Green Goblin Smoothie from Simple Green Smoothies:

  • 1 cup spinach (I used kale instead)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 orange, peeled
  • 1 cup pineapple
  • 1/2 banana

Mix your greens and water first until you get a nice smooth consistency.  Then, add your remaining ingredients and blend.  If you want this cold – use frozen pineapple and frozen bananas (don’t throw those brown bananas away – chop and freeze instead ;)).

In fact, it wasn’t until the following week when I wasn’t having the smoothies, that I realized how great I had felt the week before on the Simple 7 challenge.  Which is why I’m returned to the program.
